A-1. First impression lasts a long time
Price: $0.02 / My two cents worth
|
My early newspaper career answering the Peru Daily Tribune phone to report scores of the Indiana High School annual basket ball tournament with sectionals in 1954. Some subscribers did not have dial phones, particularly those on the farm, who had to share "party" lines.
Impressions:
Every school started out even and many little schools won the first round
Fan base will do almost anything for their team
Students, parents and grandparents followed the event even after their team had been eliminated.
Passion for the activity, players and school spirit seemed to increase every year. In smaller towns, it was just as intense or maybe even more rabid.
Newspapers would often sell advertising for a "signature page" to wish the team well.
Paid subscribers often would be better customers because they may have felt a little bit like "owners" and not just participants.
If you want to get a taste of the Indiana basketball passion click the link following which will take you to a story about the movie "Hooisers" and Indiana Pacers wearing the uniforms for remembering...
History: It's been almost 25 years ago the family newspapers were sold and I have developed a format for tools that provide significant content and since I am not much good with details, the age has caught up and it doesn't work like it was designed, but it still works for my purposes.
I have purposely set out to make things happen and have not done much on the revenue side but am pleased with the value many tell me it has been helpful. So I keep it alive, although keeping up with added activities, it is getting close to the time I will just get too tired.
So if you want to particpate and maybe learn how it works, you can have as much fun as I have had. Simply let me know you want to participate and we will work something out.
And the web site link below takes you to the movie about "Hoosiers" if you want to get to the detail of the actual sight, go to this link:

A-2. Second impression lasts a long time as well, but it doesn't have the cache, and you wonder...
Price: $0.02 / My two cents worth
|
Impressions about flowers, let alone gladiolas, doesn't excite me much, but those who grow them
have a passion no less.
When I moved from Peru to Wabash, I had my first introductions to the flower since there was a
festival annually which was instigated by Jerry Jontry.
Jerry, maybe my dad's best friend, by that time had moved from the Plain Dealer to become the
publisher of Esquire Magazine in New York City.
I'm not sure exactly when the first came to Wabash but it was Jerry's baby.
It's still going. My first time was probably 1956.
And it's a lesson and impression I learned from Jerry. You don't really know how much passion
is available until you try it and if you are lucky it will take off by itself.
And some will need a little persuasion and a lot of help to watch the idea take hold.

A-4 Fourth impression
Price: $0.02 / My two cents worth

This is looking north on Wabash Street going up the hill for two blocks. Many were not prosperous retail downtown on Cass, Miami, Wabash streets.
After the Auburn Evening Star was sold, I moved back to Wabash as the Plain Dealer publisher.
I had always been active with the racquet sports and helped establish the Indiana State Racquetball Association and racquetball was getting a lot of interest.
In the middle of the block, the building was historic but had been empty for many years. It had been the plumbing operation for Mark C. Honeywell, who became a prominent Wabash citizen. Few would consider it a good place for foot traffic and even though it was right on the alley there was no parking other than those parallel on the hill.
The building was 22 x 60 and had a complete basement and second floor, which the pigeons had taken over.
But if you look at it with an idea, it would make a perfect racquet ball court, with enough room for a shower and changing area all on one floor. In the same space as the front room there could be a small apartment on the second floor.
It had also begun to have repair issues. So I got a good deal and had some credibility as several of us were setting up the Indiana Racquetball Association.
Impression: Often there is an opportunity hiding and often it is simply neglected and different paths to make it useful without a lot of hard earned cash.
And as we were working on building interest and players for racquetball, one of our sponsors was Wilson Sporting Goods, which was the principal help for a tournament tour around the state. Many smaller cities were building courts and it was very popular, and Wilson was very pleased with what we were doing.
After 1980 and a divorce I moved to Indianapolis and kept active with racquetball around the state and helped a friend of mine with his retail tennis shop.
We had been doing spring breaks destination Florida at Marco Island and played with several different racquetball friends and around 2010 a few were playing pickleball.
Impression: It was quickly apparent to me it was a game players would find fun and the more I played the less I played racquetball and the more I thought about pickleball and its future.

A-5 Fifth impression
Price: $0.02 / My two cents worth
|
After playing in several pickleball tournaments, I was convinced this was another opportunity to be on the ground floor of something likely to last. At that point there was no tennis company manufacturer or other likely supplier for products: shoes, grips, clothes, hats, shirts, etc.
And the tournament championship was named after a long time player in Utah. It was obvious to me, a national tournament could easily be done...and since pickleball is different in outdoors and indoors because the specifications for the ball is different, there was two opportunities. Wilson was a splendid prospect for that opportunity.
Impression:
Usually there is a handicap for someone with an idea and not a company which has a department to do the same creations. And once they are involved, it's a high hurdle to get over.
The only advantage I had was getting records which would prove what the historical record would be.
When I was with the newspaper, we did this regularly and often were in the race to get it first but first get it right. Nixon Newspapers in many markets and sizes would be ahead of most others. Some was brazen bold ideas and work out consequences later. And we often were rewarded with recognition. I'm not sure how many of our staff is in the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame but I can send you the link if you are interested. Not sure if that is worth much, but it sure helped us get very good help and reward them with recognition.

It is value to me to have the history correct and the Indiana trademark includes both the singular and plural.
For the love of the game, Thought it would be negative if I tried to use the legal system to settle the difference of option.
And recently they paid me for those details, and they did a magnificent job building the event, much better than I would have done...
Impression: It's always better to cross the "t" and dot the "i" because it is easier in the long run and you will sleep better at night.

I don't want to intrude or waste your time, but I think I have a project that would be as good or better as the pickleball adventure and will provide specific current details.
And it would fit for multiple venues each cycle, which might be more than annually.

Advertising, marketing, promotions
Does advertising work? Does it reach a prospect?
Price: $0.02 / My two cents worth
|
Steps - all needed:
A - Attention, you have to get a project to pay attention
I - Interest, if it doesn't fit a solution, it may not work
D - Desire, the prospect must want of have a need
C - Conviction, must meet the needs of the have or want

Guide: Eagles Nest Friendship list explained
|
Several years ago Michelle Virkler and Gene Engle established the Eagles Nest Friendship list to facilitate buying, selling and renting Eagles Nest timeshare units with other owners. When Michelle decided to stop, Don Nixon thought it was helpful and volunteered to keep it active.
If this is the first message you have received, simply click "reply" which confirms you received it.
Please include your name, telephone contact and week(s) and unit # you own and you will receive periodic updates and Eagles Nest news.
At some point, if you own multiple weeks, it may encourage trades to avoid a move to a different unit wasting much of a Friday of your time at Marco. However, management now helps you with those moves so it isn't as much hassle.
When new listings are submitted, we usually check current listings and send details to those on the friendship list. All current listings are posted at:
http://www.radioad.org/bhrn/classifieds/listings.php?catcode=Timeshare
(You can click on the website link following)
If you have a unit to rent, buy, sell or trade, it's easier if you send us details. We post your listing to fit our format to sort correctly. Include your e-mail and telephone contact so interested parties may easily contact you directly.
The list is not affiliated with Hilton and there is no reason to avoid any other means to find someone who may have an interest in what you are listing.
The "Exp" is the date a listing automatically expires. You should get a system generated e-mail the day before your listing expires to remind you to renew it.(*) If details are still correct, simply click reply. That sends us detail to reset the expiration which extends your listing for another 15 days. Clicking reply makes it easier for us to update your listing. (For sale listings usually expire on the 30th day of the month)
The identification number is automatically included so you need not add any message unless you want to change the price or other details. Since these are essentially sent to about 700 other owners, who know how the Eagles Nest time share works, so the only pertinent details are week number, unit and price. Listings are then posted in sequential week number order: wanted, for rent, for sale.
Since some owners also have timeshares at other properties, we accept those listings, including units an Eagles Nest owner has available at the Marco Beach Ocean Resort next door. To ignore any of those listings simply add "Eag" in the search box above "Name/business"
When you are in Marco and talk to your friends, see if they are on the friendship list. If they are not, simply send us their contact information. With more owners on the list, the better response you will get.
Currently there is no charge for owners to subscribe to the list or post listings.
However, at one point when an owner advised the front desk persons of available units, a "spiff" was given, which I think was $25. If you make an arrangement through the Friendship List, feel free to carry on the tradition for any amount you think appropriate.
There is a fee for non subscribers to submit listings.
The last time I checked, current rental information through Eagles Nest is at this link: (don't rely on this being current)
https://www.hiltongrandvacations.com/en/resorts-and-destinations/florida/gulf/eagles-nest-beach-resort
Note: If you decide to go through Hilton's program to either rent or sell your unit, you sign an exclusive contract with them and must pay the fee regardless of who initiates a deal. Often transactions through that source may be less hassle than with private parties.
Vacation planning calendar for Eagles Nest Fri to Fri is included at this link: (don't rely on this being current)
www.hgvc.com/hoa_calendar/VacationPlanningCalendar.pdf
(*)This is a typical system generated message so you may want to make sure future messages don't go to your junk mail folder.
Listings are automatically posted on several other databases which is why “Eagles Nest and Marco Island” are included in listing details. The phone number listed makes direct contact with the owner on the Friendship List so it does not go through Eagles Nest or Hilton Grand Vacations and is not affiliated with either of those entities.
Friendship List information for each individual is not available to anyone who does not have authorization and is not posted or public. Currently there are more than 600 names on the list and each has a unique id#. If you want to verify someone is on the list, ask for the number and send it to us.
When new information for the Eagles Nest Friendship list is received, it’s posted and periodically an e-mail is sent to those on the list.(*) This e-mail notice is no longer system generated. It will be sent from Don. If you "unsubscribe" to it, you will no longer get any of those updates, although you may still receive system generated notices.
If you are new to the list, you should receive your first e-mail in a day or so. System generated messages are not monitored for receipt and some folks report they do not consistently receive them. I have set up a separate mail to include the updates.(*) You can respond to either one if you have a question.
However, if you select unsubscribe on that list, your e-mail will permanently be deleted.
If your e-mail address changes, you will no longer receive updated messages.
Your submissions are edited for consistency and style, which is standard English with capital letters and lower case as appropriate.
If it's tedious to go through all current listings, you can use the search feature to find specific weeks or for rent or for sale items. Remember to hit the search key at the top of the page and at the bottom right of the top box with fields in it.
To submit information, or if you have questions, simply hit reply. There's no charge to join the friendship list or post information. Suggest you include e-mail contact and telephone number to make it easy for someone to respond to your listing.
If you are selling a unit, it's helpful to identify if fixed or flex.
If you don't want to participate, simply hit the reply button and mark "delete" and all your contact information will be deleted.
Thanks
Willard Rohrer
PS - If you have questions simply click the reply button on any message which will identify the listing you have a question about. If you have an interest in any listing, simply click the "Make an offer" button to send an e-mail to the person who has listed the item.

Player ranking ladder
|
Using a "spreadsheet" or something similar which will rank 50 participants based on skill and competition, much like a ladder challenge for tennis players.
It works like this using a "if/then" rule.
Say this is the ranking for 10 participants.
1. Don Nixon
2. Joe Nixon
3. Angy Nixon
4. Zella Nixon
5. Brandon Mack
6. Ben Lupton
7. Scott Sander
8. Maren Sander
9. Al Cairns
and
10. Dana Nixon
All of them have a unique id# so if there is a specific activity where there is a doubles team, each team would have a unique number as well.
If/when Ben Lupton plays Joe Nixon and wins, the ranking order changes to
1. Don Nixon
6. Ben Lupton
2. Joe Nixon
3. Angy Nixon
4. Zella Nixon
5. Brandon Mack
7. Scott Sander
8. Maren Sander
9. Al Cairns
and
10. Dana Nixon
and it is renumbered to be:
1. Don Nixon
2. Ben Lupton
3. Joe Nixon
4. Angy Nixon
5. Zella Nixon
6. Brandon Mack
7. Scott Sander
8. Maren Sander
9. Al Cairns
and
10. Dana Nixon
Suspect it could be done with an app and all I need is the updated lists of players in the new ranking order.
The app would carry the unique player id# and would be time sensitive when the change report is delivered.

Super show in Atlanta which brought together most companies which provided retail stores with sporting goods equipment. Many store owners would wander the isles to see what was new.
As it got older and bigger, the dominant companies like "NIKE" and "adidas" began to see which would have the best exhibit and the cost of that race made it too costly for any of the small businesses to virtually be noticed, but it no longer had value to any media company to explain the newest tool for games.
BUT, the content made the event valuable to store owners, enthusiastic media people, and professional and amateur players, who was the catalyst for the game improving whether fishing, team sports or individual sports.

Years Ago
Wabash (IN) Plain Dealer: Chapter 23
|
Chapter 23: Jane, Merv and Stuffy
“Tell me about Dewey,” I asked the pretty young woman sitting at her desk.
If she was surprised by that opening, she didn’t show it.
Dewey -- a combination schnauzer and poodle – was fine, she reported.
The woman was Jane Pauley, who had recently become the co-host of NBC’s “Today” show, America’s top-rated morning news-information program.
Harold Chatlosh and I had come to New York for three days, the first step in carrying out Nixon Newspapers’ latest publishing idea: whether books printed on newspaper presses could be viable products.
The idea had germinated with Bob Schwartz, a business professor who taught a course in creativity at Purdue University –Westville, some ten miles south of Michigan City. Schwartz knew the Nixons through his friendship with Bob (the father) and George (the son) Averitt, who, combined, were the publishers for the News-Dispatch for more than fifty years.
Not long after I wrote the “Hoosiers in Washington” series, Don Nixon and I were brainstorming ideas one spring afternoon. The series had received lots of positive feedback in communities served by NNI papers and those that bought the articles.
Don and I discussed Indiana and Indiana-connected people who might be worth a project. George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees (who would later win the World Series under his proprietorship), and Jean Young, wife of UN Ambassador Andrew Young, intrigued us. Steinbrenner had gone to Culver Military Academy (Don’s alma mater) and was an active alum. Mrs. Young had attended Manchester College in northern Wabash County.
But then, Don asked, “How about Jane Pauley?”
Bingo.
“Can you write 15,000 to 20,000 words,” he asked with a smile.
Yes, I said, if I can get Pauley on tape for a few hours. But how would we market it?
We can decide that later, Don replied.
Pauley had graduated from Indiana University (Don’s alma mater, too) just six years earlier and, after dabbling in political work, been hired by Indianapolis television station WISH, Channel 8, as a reporter. She was the epitome of a fresh face. As one television executive told me, “She can take a close up.”
Pauley’s popularity soared quickly, prompting the NBC affiliate in Chicago to hire her as an anchor. But her reception by Chicago Tribune television critic Gary Deeb was as cold as the wind coming off Lake Michigan. He wrote that she had the IQ of a cantaloupe.
Deeb’s dig didn’t matter. Pauley connected with Chicago viewers the same way she had with Indianapolis folk. NBC honchos in New York took note.
Now, in the summer of 1977, she was co-anchor of Today with a guy named Tom Brokaw.
Don and I decided we could successfully produce a “paperback book” priced much less than the current $1.95 to $2.25. All we had to do was get Pauley and NBC to cooperate.
Pauley agreed to the project, because, she told us later, we were Indiana people.
After scheduling interview time with Pauley through NBC’s publicity department, I called her parents in Indianapolis to request a visit before going to New York. They agreed, which was important, because I needed preliminary information about her to form a long list of questions.
The Pauleys were gracious hosts in their neat, modest home on Indianapolis’ east side. We spent two hours chatting over coffee and cookies.
When I asked about Gary Trudeau, the popular creator and cartoonist of perhaps the No. 1 comic strip in the country, Doonesbury, they politely demurred. Trudeau and Pauley were reportedly dating. They confirmed, however, that Trudeau had visited their home and cooked breakfast one morning.
But I couldn’t use that. Pauley made it clear before our first interview that she would not talk about her most private matters, such as her salary and relationships – which I fully understood and accepted.
As we had done on our Washington project, Chatlosh and I drove to New York, where we got a room at the Americana Hotel, not far from NBC studios.
Before sunrise the next morning, July 11, a security guard greeted us at NBC’s studios located at 30 Rockefeller Center. He checked his clipboard and found “Ray Moscowitz and friend” on it. Minutes later, we were being offered donuts and coffee in the “Green Room” as another Today Show was about to begin.
The show’s weatherman – a fellow who preceded Willard Scott whose name I can’t recall – made us comfortable, explaining things. As we were watching the opening segments, Tug McGraw, the noted left-handed relief pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, appeared. McGraw, who had become famous as a New York Met when he coined the expression, “You gotta believe,” was scheduled for the show. He was a down-to-earth guy who extended his hand for a shake. Like most athletes, McGraw faded from public view after his career, but his fame was rekindled later, when it was revealed that noted country singer Tim McGraw was his long-lost son.
After the show, we joined Pauley in her small office. She was open and animated as Chatlosh took dozens of candid photos. Merv Hendricks, who later designed a sixteen-page tabloid, chose several head shots to form what he called “A Jane Pauley salad” of twelve close-ups that connoted her mannerisms and personality.
During our three days in New York, I interviewed not only Pauley, but others associated with Today. We chatted with Paul Friedman, the show’s 32-year-old executive producer, in the control room before the first day’s show. An interview with Floyd Kalber, the veteran news reader who worked briefly with Pauley in Chicago before joining the Today crew, produced some telling quotes.
In a column Hendricks wrote after the project was completed, he noted that Don Nixon and I still weren’t sure how to market what we had after Harold and I returned to Wabash. We would soon find out.
Barbara volunteered to translate several hours of taped interviews, the first step toward getting Pauley’s brief, but attention-grabbing, life on paper. One evening I heard her chuckling. “Good quote?” I asked, stepping into our home office.
“No,” she responded. “Listen to this.”
She replayed a few seconds of me snoring. In the wee small hours of the first night, Chatlosh was still awake, listening to me saw off Z’s. He turned on the tape recorder and announced what the listener was about to hear. He has told that story on me several times over the years.
It took Barbara a few days to completed her task, which required dozens of 8 ½ by 11 sheets of paper.
I worked at home. My goal was to write a first draft in three days – even though I had never dealt with so much material. I began organizing the transcript, dividing it into sections dealing with various aspects of her life. Once that was finished, I laid the piles on the floor of our office. The piles covered the entire carpet, save for a path to the door.
I crawled around on my hands and knees, reading through the piles and taking notes. Finally, I was ready to organize the material into a narrative, which was not difficult.
Now I was ready to sit down at my old, black Royal typewriter and start writing, now knowing what my defining paragraph would say.
As I finished using segments of notes, I removed them from the floor. Barbara peeked in periodically to see if I needed anything. On the afternoon of the first day, she remarked, “I’m beginning to see the carpet again.” Her light remark gave me a boost.
As Hendricks reported in his column, while I was writing one day, Harry McDaniel of Kroger’s Indianapolis advertising and marketing office stopped in to see Don, who mentioned our Pauley project. We’re calling it “Portrait,” Don said, because that’s what it was – a portrait of someone, not a full-blown biography.
McDaniel knew Pauley’s dad, who at that point had worked eighteen years for Dean’s Foods, a dairy products company. McDaniel said he was interested, and Don said he would make the first passages available to him.
A few days later, McDaniel read the first 3,000 words of the nearly-17,000-word manuscript. He liked what he saw, which would lead to a test product that consisted of sixteen tabloid-size pages of text, photos and Kroger institutional advertising.
Kroger decided to distribute XXXXX? copies in stores located in Wabash, Peru, Marion, Frankfort, Lebanon and Brazil. Some copies were marketed free with a coupon, while others sold for ten cents or twenty five cents with a coupon.
Kroger promoted the Jane Pauley Portrait in its ads, and Hendricks wrote a promo for the local newspapers involved. The product rolled off the Plain Dealer presses in late September 1977.
The response from readers was solid, but Kroger chose not to buy additional copies after the test was completed. Don and I were disappointed, naturally, but he had gotten wind that the IGA grocery stores in Michigan might be interested. Don arranged to make a presentation, which resulted in IGA buying XXXXX? copies. The stores reported good success and feedback, prompting IGA officials to ask if we were planning another Portrait.
We were. But we couldn’t tell them who it would be, because we didn’t know who would agree to participate. That, in fact, proved to be our biggest problem. Two prominent athletes, through their agents, declined our offer when they learned they would not be paid a fee. The publicity didn’t matter to them. Money, indeed, talks.
But a second “Portrait” would eventually materialize.
